Winds as of Saturday are holding steady about Tropical Cyclone
Bento. Saturday afternoon, EST, Bento is located over the
wide-open South Indian Ocean 660 miles south-southeast of Diego
Garcia, Chagos Islands. Bento is drifting towards the southeast
at 8 mph with highest sustained winds of 65 to 70 mph. Bento is
of no threat to any land.
Back-to-back minus-60-degree nights were bookends for a daytime
no "warmer" than 55 degrees below zero. So it was late this week at
Oymyakon, Russia. This is the heart of the Siberian "pole of cold"
which, in wintertime, is the coldest part of the inhabited world. The
two respective lows were 61 and 62 degrees Friday and Saturday. These
data conform well to the average day at the deepest depths of winter,
which is mid January. At this time, the average range in temperature
is between 63 and 54 degrees below zero. Saturday's normal
temperatures are -39 and -46 degrees for high and low, respectively.
High winds raked northern Japan Friday night and Saturday. Winds
gusted to 76 mph at Hachinohe, and to 73 mph at Sendai.
A deep storm swept over the Labrador Sea Friday night and
Saturday. Winds of hurricane strength lashed opposing shores of the
sea, both in Canada and in Greenland. Early Saturday, sustained winds
rose to 85 mph on Brevoort Island off eastern Baffin Island, Nunavut,
Canada. Temperatures hovered in the lower 20s. To the east, Godthab
(Nuuk), Greenland, clocked early-morning gusts to nearly 90 mph.
Most of a late-week snow storm that blanketed Oslo, Norway,
happened Friday. Snowfall was about one foot.
