Tropical Cyclone Bento is holding its own for the time being.
Friday afternoon, EST, the core Bento is 540 miles south-southeast of
Diego Garcia, Chagos Islands. Bento is drifting towards the southeast
at 11 mph with highest sustained winds holding near 75 mph, or about
that of a minimal hurricane. Weakening is in the forecast for this
cyclone, which will be far from any land.
What was once Tropical Storm Muifa has drifted inland from the
Gulf of Thailand Friday. As the tropical depression neared its
landfall, it poured 9.9 inches of rain upon Prachuap Khiri Khan,
Thailand.
Friday was the coldest day since last February in the heart of
Russia's Siberian "pole of cold". At Oymyakon, the mercury bottomed
61 degrees below zero, then barely crawled to a high of -55. The
average daily range is bracketed by -45 and -37, the respective low
and high. Elsewhere in the pole of cold, there were other standouts.
Verkhoyansk dipped to 53 degrees below zero, Tompo settled to -52,
and Seymchan hit -50 degrees.
Paling in the light of Oymyakon's bitter chill, Shepherd Bay,
Nunavut, Canada, weathered a nasty chill of its own Friday. The
morning low was -46 degrees and, during the day, the temperature
hovered between 42 and 48 degrees below zero.
Kigali, Rwanda, had 7.1 inches of rain within 24 hours Thursday to
Friday.
A strong storm swept off the eastern Mediterranean Sea early
Friday. The storm pounded Lebanon with torrential rains; nearly 5.0
inches of rain washed Beirut, where winds Friday gusted 45 to 55 mph.
In Syria, rainfall topped four inches at Latakia. High winds raked
Dimashq (Damascus) at speeds of 50 to 60 mph. Farther north, the
storm had a wintry aspect over Turkey. It was the second snow storm
within a week at Yozgat, where new snowfall was 16 inches. More than
a foot of fresh snow fell upon Kayseri.
