November 25, 2004 5:06 p.m.

Once-mighty Tropical Cyclone Bento is still a strong storm over
the South Indian Ocean, although it is showing signs of weakening.
Early Thursday evening, EST, the core Bento is 300 miles
south-southeast of Diego Garcia, Chagos Islands. Bento is drifting
toward the south-southeast at 10 mph with highest sustained winds of
95 mph. Bento is forecast to weaken whilst making toward the south
over open seas.

What was once Tropical Storm Muifa has weakened to a tropical
depression. Early Thursday evening, EST, the core of the depression is
about 250 miles south of Bangkok, Thailand. Muifa is on a heading
toward the west at 15 mph with highest sustained winds of 35 mph.
Muifa is still forecast to cross the Malay Peninsula to the Andaman
Sea. Once over the open Indian Ocean, the storm may strengthen anew.

Cloudbursts spilled rain in staggering proportion over Hue, Vietnam,
Wednesday night through Thursday night. Rainfall was 29.0 inches within
30 hours; of this 23.4 inches fell within 12 hours. Fall marks the height
of the rainy season throughout this stretch of middle Vietnam; in
November alone, 25 inches of rain normally douses Hue.

As days go, Thursday was coldest of the season thus far at
Oymyakon, Russia. This infamous and notorious cold spot set a daily
low temperature of 59 degrees below zero, or 14 degrees below the
average of -45 degrees. The daily high was 48 below zero, or 11 below
average.

Fresh snow cover helped early Thursday to foster deep cold
befitting mid winter over Moscow, Russia. Low temperatures ranged
from zero, to 6 or more degrees below zero, or at least 22 degrees
below average for the date.

Heavy rains have come early to portions of northern Queensland,
Australia. Tuesday to Wednesday, for example, saw rainfall of about
3.2 inches at the seaside city of Cairns. Average rainfall here during
all of November is about 3.1 inches, so this tally was surpassed
within 36 hours. The rainy season, also known as The Wet, in northern
Australia commences late in December and peaks in February or March.
In Cairns, the monthly mean rainfall rises to 7.4 inches in December,
to 16.5 inches in January and to 17.6 inches in February.
