Cyclone Bento remains a dangerous storm over the South Indian
Ocean, although it has weakened somewhat. Late Wednesday afternoon,
EST, the eye of Bento is 185 miles south-southeast of Diego Garcia,
Chagos Islands. Bento is drifting towards the southwest at 5 mph with
highest sustained winds of 140 mph. A track towards the southwest and
south is forecast for Bento; such a path would spare Diego Garcia a
mighty blow.
Tropical Storm Muifa is clipping Vietnam's far south while moving
over the southwestern South China Sea. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST,
the core of the storm is 215 miles southwest of Ho Chi Minh City
(Saigon), Vietnam. Muifa is on a heading towards the west at 21 mph
with highest sustained winds of 45 mph. Muifa is still forecast to
move westward over the next 24 to 48 hours on a course which would
cut across the Malay Peninsula and reach the Andaman Sea.
The week began with soaking rains in parts of northeastern Luzon,
Philippines. At Casiguran, rainfall was 10.7 inches as of Wednesday
morning, local time. Rainfall over the same span was 8.0 inches at
Tuguegarao.
In the bitter, early-morning chill of Wednesday, barometric
pressure was unusually high in the core of an arctic anti-cyclone over
Mongolia. Pressure, corrected to sea level, topped out 1075 to 1080
millibars, or between 31.75 and 31.89 inches of mercury. Hanh, which
is set in a high, broad basin near the Russian (Siberian) border, read
at least 1077 mb as it set a low of 26 degrees below zero.
Heavy rains have come early to portions of northern Queensland,
Australia. Tuesday to Wednesday, for example, saw rainfall of about
3.2 inches at the seaside city of Cairns. Average rainfall here during
all of November is about 3.1 inches, so this tally was surpassed
within 36 hours. The rainy season, also known as The Wet, in northern
Australia commences late in December and peaks in February or March.
In Cairns, the monthly mean rainfall rises to 7.4 inches in December,
to 16.5 inches in January and to 17.6 inches in February.
Tuesday and Wednesday were unusually cold over the highlands of
eastern Turkey. Take Erzurum where Wednesday's morning low was 8
degrees below zero. Highs Tuesday and Wednesday were 24 and 18
degrees, respectively. November has a mean daily high of 42 degrees
and a mean daily low of 23 here, so these marks were 18 to 31 degrees
below average.
