Powerful and dangerous Cyclone Bento is churning the South Indian
Ocean. Late Tuesday afternoon, EST, the eye of Bento is 160 miles
southeast of Diego Garcia, Chagos Islands. Bento is heading towards
the west at 6 mph with highest sustained winds reckoned to be 160 mph.
Forecasts are for Bento to hook towards the southwest and south within
the next one to two days and thus to skirt Diego Garcia to its south.
Muifa has weakened to a tropical storm over the South China Sea
near southern Indochina. Late Tuesday afternoon, EST, the core of
Tropical Storm Muifa is 230 miles east-southeast of Ho Chi Minh City
(Saigon), Vietnam. Muifa is making towards the west-southwest at 6 mph
with highest sustained winds of 65 mph. Muifa is forecast to veer
towards the west over the next 24 to 48 hours bound for the Gulf of
Thailand. The storm could make landfall over the southern tip of
Vietnam.
High winds rushing from the Black Sea basin to that of the
Caspian Sea raked the Trans Caucasus Tuesday. In Georgia, winds
gusting 60 to 70 mph lashed Tbilisi. Winds roared through Baku,
Azerbaijan, at speeds of 40 to 60 mph. Along northern slopes of the
high Caucasus Range, snow fell from the instigating storm. Snowfall
at Ordzhonikidze, Russia, since early Monday was about 15 inches.
Tuesday, the second severe wind storm within less than a week
swept over middle Europe. Winds gusted 50 to 60 mph at Vienna, and to
at least 65 mph in nearby Voslau, Austria. High winds also buffeted
Czech and Slovakia.
Kautokeino, Norway, has, as of Tuesday, had about three days of
unbroken deep freeze registering 20 to 30 degrees below zero. Thus,
temperatures, have held up to 35 degrees below average.
The week began with soaking rains in parts of northeastern Luzon,
Philippines. At Casiguran, rainfall was 9.7 inches within 60 hours as
of Tuesday evening, local time. Rainfall over the same span was 7.6
inches at Tuguegarao.
In Nunavut, Canada, Monday and Tuesday were unusually and harshly
cold at Shepherd Bay. Monday afternoon, the temperature hovered around
-40 degrees. A low of -43 degrees was set late Monday and early
Tuesday, then the temperature struggled to reach 30 degrees below zero
Tuesday afternoon. November's mean daily high and low here are -2 and
-11 degrees, respectively, so these marks have been far below average.
Winds roared 50-70 sustained mph for more than 18 hours Monday to
Tuesday at Vestmannaeyjar on Heimaey Island, Iceland. The high winds
came with some rain and wet snow as the temperature crept from the
middle 30s to the middle 40s.
A cloudburst left 5.4 inches of rain within 24 hours Sunday to
Monday at Lele, Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia.
