Typhoon Muifa is over the South China Sea. Late Monday afternoon,
EST, Muifa is located 355 miles east of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon),
Vietnam. Drifting towards the southwest at 5 mph, Muifa owns highest
sustained winds of 75 mph. Muifa is forecast to move on a
west-southwestward track for the next 24 to 48 hours; during this
time, its core will approach the southern tip of Vietnam.
Cyclone Bento has strengthened markedly over the open South Indian
Ocean. Late Monday afternoon, EST, Bento is 285 miles east-southeast
of Diego Garcia, Chagos Islands. Bento is heading towards the
west-northwest at 6 mph and is packing 120-mph highest sustained
winds. An overall west-southwestward track is foreseen for Bento for
at least the next two days.
A tropical wave over the North Indian Ocean south of southern
India is viewed as a tropical cyclone candidate. Late Monday
afternoon, EST, this tropical wave is about 295 miles southwest of
Colombo, Sri Lanka, and 200 miles east of Male, Maldives; it is moving
towards the west-northwest at 7 mph.
A strong storm linked to a cold front has unleashed soaking
rains, highland snows and strong winds over southwestern Asia. In
Turkey, rainfall was 3.3 inches at Adana near the northeastern tip of
the Mediterranean Sea. Inland, Bingol picked of 3.0 inches of cold
rain. Uplands farther west saw snow with seven inches of snow
blanketing Yozgat. In western Syria, rainfall was 4.0 inches at
Latakia.
Most of Scandinavia has been in the deep freeze lately, but none
more so than Saamiland, or Lapland. Kautokeino, Norway, had
nearly 48 hours straight of 20 to 30 degrees below zero, or up to 35
degrees below average. Temperatures were below -20 degrees in Finland
(-23 at Sodankyla) and in Sweden (-23 at Karesuando and -20 at
Pajala).
Heavy rains continued over many islands of the eastern Caribbean
Sea Sunday to Sunday night. Twenty-four hour rainfalls as of Monday
morning were: 3.3 inches at Canefield, Dominica; 2.7 inches at
Melville Hall, Dominica; 3.2 inches at Piarco, Trinidad; 2.8 inches at
Grantley Adams, Barbados; and 2.5 inches at Le Raizet, Guadeloupe.
