November 20, 2004 2:41 p.m.

Muifa is heading for the South China Sea having lost typhoon
status over the Philippines archipelago. Late Saturday morning, EST,
Tropical Storm Muifa is 210 miles southwest of Manila, and 50 to 75
miles west-northwest of the Calamian Islands. Its highest sustained
winds still near 70 mph, Muifa was heading towards the west-southwest
at 8 mph. Muifa is forecast to track towards the west, perhaps
regaining typhoon status over the South China Sea.

The first big shot of winter for a wide swath of northern and
eastern Europe took the shape of a swift and intense snow burst. The
storm began laying down a blanket of snow early Friday over eastern
Germany, but really got down to business as it made its way over open
plains of Poland and southern Belarus. Early Saturday, snow lay 5
inches deep over Warsaw, Poland; in Belarus, 8 inches blanketed Brest
and 7 inches covered Pinsk. A dive in temperature from above freezing
to the 20s, together with winds of 20 to 40 mph, without doubt made
for tough going on roadways. Meantime, Saturday found heavy,
windswept snows well underway over eastern Belarus and the Russian
heartland. Snow fell heavily over greater Moscow as winds of 20 to 40
mph drifted the snow cover.

The windward side of Dominica weather another tropical cloudburst
early Saturday. As observed at the Melville Hall airport near Wesley,
the downpour amounted to 3.4 inches. Thus, the three-day stretch ended
Saturday morning saw rainfall of 17 inches bolstered by an 11-inch
outburst Thursday night.

Heavy snows since midweek at Tafjord, Norway, have boosted snow
depth from 9 to 30 inches. Tafjord, though at sea level, is tucked
back up a fjord and is thus removed from the direct warmth of the
Norwegian Sea. Sites near the open sea had far less snow cover, if
any.

Late Thursday through earliest Saturday, local time, torrential
rains pelted the western Azores archipelago. On Flores, rainfall was
6.5 inches within 30 to 36 hours. November's mean rainfall here is
5-6 inches, so these downpours topped the monthly average output.

Friday was unusually warm along some coastal stretches of eastern
South Island, New Zealand. For example, winds blowing seaward from the
Southern Alps warmed the town of Timaru to 83 degrees whereas the
average daily high in November is in the middle 60s. This warming
held sway again Saturday with highs up to about 80 degrees.
