November 18, 2004 5:11 p.m.

Typhoon Muifa continued to spin just east of Luzon Island,
Philippines Thursday. Late in the day, EST, the storm was centered
about 230 miles to the east-northeast of Manila, and about 130 miles
northeast of Daet, Luzon. Top sustained winds were estimated to be
near 120 mph. Movement was barely a crawl -- southeastward at 3 mph.
Muifa was forecast to remain nearly stationary for another 12-18 hours
and then to assume a southwestward heading which would take it across
the southern part of Luzon. This projected track would bring Muifa back
over open waters of the South China Sea on Saturday. Muifa holds
further threat of excessive, flooding rains given its slow movement
and the rugged setting of the islands it will probably cross; damaging
winds are a serious threat as well.

As of Thursday afternoon, local time, rainfall from Typhoon Muifa
was almost 16 inches at Virac, Catanduanes Island. At the Catanduanes
radar site, rainfall was close to 20 inches. Farther from the center
of the storm, on the eastern part of Luzon island, rainfall was over
eight inches at Daet, and close to seven inches at Legaspi. Most of
the rainfall fell within 48 hours Monday into Wednesday. Rainfall
tapered off Wednesday and Thursday, but could pick up again as Muifa
heads westward and moves closer to the island again.

Strong winds raked Denmark and southern Sweden Wedneday night and
Thursday as a powerful storm swept through. Many locations had
sustained winds over 35 mph, and gusts close to 60 mph. Among the
highest winds were 74 mph at Skyrdstrup and 73 mph at Ronne, both in
Denmark. On the Baltic Sea, a ship reported sustained winds of 62
mph, and waves 20 feet high.

Heavy rains have lately washed many islands of the southern and
eastern Caribbean Sea. In the southern Caribbean, for example,
rainfall was 8.7 inches from Monday morning to Thursday afternoon at
the Hato airport on Curacao. Nearby, Bonaire was soaked by 7.7 inches
of rain as measured at the Flamingo Field airport. To the east,
Martinique, one of the Windward Islands, collected 4.4 inches of rain
within 30 hours as of Thursday afternoon at the Le Lamentin airport
outside Fort-de-France, the capital.
