Here is an update with photo of downed transmission tower:

"HALIFAX (CP) - Nova Scotians in more than 100,000 homes and businesses are
facing what could be several cold days without power after a wicked winter
storm knocked out electricity around the province Sunday.

The provincial power utility was struggling to keep up with repairs Sunday
night and officials said they feared increasing ice on power lines would
bring about a "worst-case scenario" for the electrical grid. High winds
drove a mix of freezing rain, snow and sleet Sunday as a storm that began a
day earlier continued to pound the province.

While the power utility said an estimated 100,000 customers were without
power, the number of people without electricity might actually be
higher. Power officials were predicting it could be the end of the week
before electricity was completely restored

The heavy, wet snow proved to be too much for six steel power-transmission
in the Halifax area that crumpled like tin foil under the weight. Murphy
said the damage was comparable to that caused by hurricane Juan, which tore
through Nova Scotia in the fall of 2003. "Transmission towers crumpling is
right up there with the kind of damage we associate with ice storms or that
we saw during hurricane Juan," Murphy said. "It's some of the most extreme
damage that you can imagine to your power system."
