HALIFAX (CP) - Much of Nova Scotia was blanketed by snow and plunged into
darkness Sunday as the first major snowstorm of the season brought winter
in with a wallop.
"It's bad," said Margaret Murphy, spokeswoman for Nova Scotia
Power. "And it's going to get worse before it gets better."
Thousands of customers were without power Sunday as crews worked flat out
to restore service in windy conditions that shifted between hail, sleet and
snow. Estimates on the number of people left in the dark continued to
change as new outages were reported throughout Sunday, said Murphy. Some
parts of the province saw as much as 45 centimetres of snow fall overnight
and winds raging up to 90 kilometres per hour.
Nova Scotia has averaged just nine centimetres of snow during the entire
month of November for the last 50 years.
Environment Canada weather said storm conditions were expected to continue
throughout Sunday, bringing rain, drizzle and ice pellets to most parts of
the region. Strong gusting and high winds were also expected to pound the
province throughout the remainder of the weekend. "
