October 30, 2004 3:41 p.m.

Here are Saturday`s cold spots from the Siberian Pole of Cold:
Oymyakon reached 43 degrees below zero; Tompo, Verkhoyansk and
Zhilinda all dipped to minus-40. All are in Russia`s vast Yakutiya,
or republic of Sakha.

Friday and Saturday were even hotter than usual in parts of
Western Australia. Mardie, Dampier, Roebourne and Marble Bar each
soared to about 110 degrees or 10-15 degrees hotter than average for
October.

A blizzard Friday night and early Saturday swept along the shores
of the arctic Amundsen Gulf in far-northwestern Canada. At Cape Parry,
NWT, winds gusted 45 to 55 mph as snow was churned into
near-whiteouts. Given temperatures in the single digits, wind chill
worked out to be about 20 degrees below zero.

A strong Atlantic storm lashed eastern Newfoundland Friday to
early Saturday. Strong gales blew steadily at Bonavista with
sustained winds nearing 60 mph at times. A numbingly cold rain fell.
Inland, the storm left early snows at Gander, and there was also an
inch of snowfall at Saint John`s.

Shores of southeastern India have been washed by seasonal rains
this week. Three-day rainfall was about six inches as of Saturday at
Chennai (Madras).

The last week of October was abnormally warm from central Europe
eastward into Russia. Vienna, Austria, for example, surpassed 70
degrees on Saturday, 20 degrees above average. The week as a whole
was about 10 degrees above average. Warsaw, Poland saw temperatures
approach 70 degrees several times during the week; the average high
there is 50 degrees. In Moscow, Russia, the week was about 5 degrees
milder than average.
