It is not even November, yet the Siberian Pole of Cold in
far-northeastern Russia is already living up to its legendary
status. A steady downturn in temperature this week began following
a steep plunge to wintry status last week. Thursday and again Friday,
Oymyakon and Verkhoyansk each set respective, back-to-back lows of 42
and 40 degrees below zero. Both sites are notorious for the depth to
which winter temperatures can and do sink. For sake of reference,
Friday's average daily low for both sites was 19 degrees below zero.
Rainfall Friday was 5.8 inches on the island of Tanega Shima, off
the southwestern mainland of Japan,
A weak tropical cyclone is dissipating as it nears the shores of
Tanzania, East Africa, from the western South Indian Ocean.
Friday was even hotter than usual in parts of Western Australia.
Mardie, Dampier, Roebourne and Marble Bar each soared to about 110
degrees or 10-15 degrees hotter than average for October.
A storm brought locally heavy rain to western parts of the Mideast
on Friday. In western Jordan, for example, rainfall was 3.6 inches
within twelve hours from thundery downpours at Ghor El Safi.
