Monday, Typhoon Nock-Ten clipped northeastern Taiwan, then
weakened to a tropical storm. Late Monday afternoon, EDT, the core of
Tropical Storm Nock-Ten is 215 miles northeast of Taipei, Taiwan. Its
highest sustained winds down to about 70 mph, Nock-Ten is moving
towards the northeast at 16 mph. Further weakening seems certain, as
the storm is forecast to veer eastwards over the East China Sea, then
to track near the northern Ryukyu Islands of Japan Tuesday into
Tuesday night, local time.
The wrath of Nock-Ten was strongly felt over northern Taiwan
Monday. In Taipei, winds gusted above 60 mph amidst torrential,
driving rains at the height of the storm. Rainfall was about eight
inches. Off northern Taiwan, the island of Penkia Yu was raked by
winds that topped 80 sustained mph.
Unusually warm weather has spread over much of southern and
western Europe lately. On both days of the weekend, highs were at
least 70 degrees north to northern France and parts of Germany.
Sunday's high of 70 in Paris was 13 degrees above normal. Farther south,
temperatures soared into the 80s as far north as southwestern France,
where Mont de Marsan saw 84 degrees Sunday.
Santa Cruz, on the plains of eastern Bolivia, was splashed with
5.4 inches of rain stemming from thunderstorms Sunday to early
Monday.
Stormy weather beset the islands of Bermuda during the past
weekend as a large and strong extratropical cyclone spun over the
western North Atlantic Ocean. Gale-force wind gusts were clocked
beginning Saturday evening and continuing to late Sunday. At their
peak early Sunday morning, top sustained winds were above 50 mph and
highest gusts were nearly 65 mph. The fierce winds were accompanied by
downpours.
Heavy rains due, in part, to a tropical disturbance washed parts
of western Mexico's state of Sinaloa Monday. The capital, Culiacan,
was soaked by 5.0 inches of rain within twelve hours. Average rainfall
in this part of the nation is 2.0-3.0 inches during October, so these
rains were unusually heavy for autumn.
