Typhoon Nock-Ten is closing in on Taiwan. With sustained winds of
120 mph. The center of the storm is 155 miles southeast of Taipei,
Taiwan on Sunday afternoon, EDT, moving toward the northwest at 17
mph. Nock-Ten is forecast to come very near the east coast of Taiwan
on Monday, local time. Heavy rain has already engulfed parts of the
island and, depending on the track of the eye, typhoon-force winds may
soon be lashing the northeast coast. From here, Nock-Ten forecast to
veer towards the northeast and weaken markedly, although a landfall in
Taiwan cannot be ruled out.

Northern parts of the Philippines are feeling the fringe effects
of Typhoon Nock-Ten. Warnings for strong wind and heavy rain have been
issued for the Batan and Babuyan Islands and for sections of extreme
northern Luzon.

Unusually warm weather has spread over much of Europe recently. On
both days of the weekend, temperatures reached 70 degrees as far
north as northern France and parts of Germany. The high of 70 in Paris
was 13 degrees above normal. Farther south, temperatures soared into
the 80s along parts of the Mediterranean, with a high of 90 degrees
set at Cordoba, Spain on Saturday.

Weather data from Siberian Russia Saturday showed, for the first
time since early last spring, temperatures below the minus-30 mark.
Lowest reported was a reading of 31 degrees below zero at the
notorious cold spot, Oymyakon. Average low for the date was 11 below.
Another minus-30 was set at Tompo, also in the heart of the Siberian
Pole of Cold.

Downpours hit Hue, Vietnam, Saturday. Rainfall was at least 6.0
inches.

Strong thunderstorms tore through Paraguay and adjacent parts of
southern Brazil and Bolivia on Saturday. In Asuncion, Paraguay, the
storms dumped over 3 inches of rain within two hours while producing
hail and wind gusts to 52 mph.
