Powerful Typhoon Nock-Ten is churning the open Philippine Sea.
Late Saturday morning, EDT, the eye of Nock-Ten is 510 miles
south of Naha, Okinawa, Japan, or 615 miles southeast of Taipei,
Taiwan. The typhoon is making way towards the west-northwest at 18
mph packing highest sustained winds of 120 mph. Nock-Ten is forecast
to approach Taiwan from the southeast Monday, local time. From here,
it is forecast to veer towards the northeast and weaken markedly,
although a landfall in Taiwan cannot be ruled out.
Weather data from Siberian Russia Saturday showed, for the first
time since early last spring, temperatures below the minus-30 mark.
Lowest reported was a reading of 31 degrees below zero at the
notorious cold spot, Oymyakon. Average low for the date was 11 below.
Another minus-30 was set at Tompo, also in the heart of the Siberian
Pole of Cold.
Downpours hit Hue, Vietnam, Saturday. Rainfall was at least 6.0
inches.
Southern and eastern sections of the Caribbean Sea have had
unsettled weather in recent days. Most islands have been wet by
showers and scattered thundery downpours. The island of Saint Kitts,
one of the Leeward Islands, has been particularly rainy. Here,
rainfall was 5.0 inches within 60 hours as of Friday morning at the
Golden Rock airport near Basseterre, the capital of Saint Kitts and
Nevis.
