Typhoon Nock-Ten is a strong, open-ocean storm over the Philippine
Sea. Late Friday afternoon, EDT, the eye of Nock-Ten is 655 miles
northwest of Yap Island, Federated States of Micronesia, and 710 miles
southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan. The typhoon is on a path towards
the northwest at 13 mph with highest sustained winds of about 115 mph.
Nock-Ten is forecast to stay this course towards the northwest over
the open Philippine Sea for at least another two days.

Harsh cold has come to parts of Siberia early. In Russia's Sakha
(Yakutia) Republic, the town of Shologontsy each early morning dipped
28, 29 and 28 degrees below zero, respectively, on Wednesday to
Friday. Wednesday's high was minus-1 degree, Thursday's was minus-5,
and Friday held no warmer then minus-7. Early Saturday, local time,
the temperature fell at least 29 degrees below zero. October's mean
daily high is 19 degrees here while its average daily low is 3.

Gales Thursday and again Friday raked the North Sea. At the
Ekofisk Oilfield, highest sustained winds Thursday were between 65 and
70 mph with gusts of 75 to 80 mph. Friday had gusts of 65 to 70 mph.

Friday, high winds swept over Tbilisi, Georgia. Steady winds
topped 40 mph and gusts rose to between 50 and 60 mph.

Southern and eastern sections of the Caribbean Sea have had
unsettled weather in recent days. Most islands have been wet by
showers and scattered thundery downpours. The island of Saint Kitts,
one of the Leeward Islands, has been particularly rainy. Here,
rainfall was 5.0 inches within 60 hours as of Friday morning at the
Golden Rock airport near Basseterre, the capital of Saint Kitts and
Nevis.
