Typhoon Nock-Ten continues to churn the Philippine Sea. Late
Thursday afternoon, EDT, Nock-Ten is centered 400 miles
north-northwest of Yap Island, Federated States of Micronesia, and 980
miles southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan. The typhoon is tracking
towards the northwest at 13 mph with highest sustained winds of about
110 mph. Nock-Ten is forecast to head pretty much toward the
west-northwest for the next 2-3 days. This would keep Nock-Ten over
the open Philippine Sea.

Alberta, Canada, has been unusually cold for October this week. In
both the province's capital, Edmonton, and in its largest city,
Calgary, Thursday was the fifth day in a row to have high temperatures
in the 20s despite average highs in the lower and middle 50s. It's
been snowy, too. Thursday afternoon, snow lay 3 inches deep in Calgary
while Edmonton was covered by 4 inches. Earlier in the week, a 7-inch
snow depth was measured at Edmonton.

Harsh cold has come to parts of Siberia early. In Russia's Sakha
(Yakutia) Republic, the town of Shologontsy dipped 28 and 29 degrees
below zero, respectively, on Wednesday morning and Thursday morning.
Early Friday, local time, the temperature dropped to at least minus-26
degrees. Wednesday's high was minus-1 degree and Thursday's was
minus-5. October's mean daily high is 19 degrees here while its
average daily low is 3.

Typhoon Tokage hammered southwestern and middle Japan with high
winds and excessive, flooding rains. Hurricane gusts were observed in
the southwest, even at the main airport of Osaka. Sustained winds of
nearly 100 mph were clocked at Muruoto Misaki on southern Shikoku.
Rainfall was staggering for its spread and amount. Higher amounts
were: Owase -- 17.8 inches; Oita (Kyushu) -- 15.8 inches; Miyazaki
(Kyushu) -- 15.2 inches; Maizuru -- 12.8; Takamatsu (Shikoku) -- 11.3
inches. Elsewhere, Osaka picked up 8.7 inches, Tokyo gathered in 8.4,
and Nagoya collected 6.5.

An interesting sideline to Tokage was its contribution to monthly
rainfall at Tokyo. October's typhoon-bolstered rainfall rose to more
than 26.4 inches in light of Tokage. Mean monthly rainfall is 8.2
inches. The first nine months of the year had 31.3 inches, an amount
nearly equaled within less than three weeks.

The Namibian capital, Windhoek, was doused with 1.6 inches of rain
Tuesday and Wednesday. This may not seem excessive, but it is four
times the average monthly rainfall of 0.4 of an inch. The same front
that brought this heavy rain unloaded a soaking across much of South
Africa. Cape Point had 1.7 inches while Capetown had 1.4 inches. This
is just under the normal monthly average rainfall of 1.6 inches.
