October 19, 2004 6:18 p.m.

Having slammed the Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa, Typhoon
Tokage is now aimed at the mainland of Japan. Late Tuesday afternoon,
EDT, the center of this storm is some 350 miles northeast of Naha,
Okinawa, or 130 miles south-southeast of Kagoshima, Kyushu, on the
southwestern mainland of Japan. It is churning towards the northeast
at 25 mph with highest sustained winds of 75 mph, or those of a
minimal typhoon. Tokage is set to accelerate towards the northeast and
to hook up with the westerlies, a process that will happen within the
next one to two days. In so doing, the cyclone will weaken to a
tropical storm, but it will still spread its stormy weather across
Japan with its core passing over or near eastern Shikoku, then across
southern and eastern Honshu before racing over the open Pacific Ocean.

Wind gusts of about 75 mph were clocked at Naha and at the Kadena
air base, both on mainland Okinawa. The smaller Okino Erabu saw
80-mph gusts. On the Japan mainland, interaction between Tokage and
the westerlies made for heavy rains over the southwest. Miyazaki, on
Kyushu, already had 7.3 inches of rain as of Tuesday evening, local
time. Rainfall of two to five inches was widespread over the
southwestern mainland and over the Ryukyus south through Okinawa.

Typhoon Nock-Ten is a strong storm over the western North Pacific
Ocean. Late Tuesday afternoon, EDT, Nock-Ten is 210 miles
south-southeast of Agana, Guam. The typhoon is tracking towards the
west-northwest at 13 mph with highest sustained winds of about 105
mph. Nock-Ten is forecast to veer towards the northwest within another
day or two and to move over the Philippine Sea. The typhoon now seems
likely to skirt Guam to the south within 12-18 hours rather than to
strike it head on.

Recent days have been unusually cold and snowy for mid-October in
Edmonton, Alberta. Tuesday, snow lay 7 inches deep at the
international airport south of the city's center. The cold and snow
moved into this provincial capital Saturday. Sunday and Monday could
only muster highs of 24 and 28 degrees, respectively, and at
midafternoon Tuesday, the temperature stood at just 25. Sunday's low
temperature was 14 degrees and Tuesday's was 16. An average day at
this time of the year would have a high in the lower 50s and a low in
the lower 30s.

On the Indonesian island of Sumatra, thundery downpours unleashed
4.7 inches of rain upon Palembang Tuesday.

A storm brought moderate to heavy rain to Portugal and western
Spain early this week. One especially rainy spot was Vigo in
northwestern Spain. Here, rainfall was 3.4 inches within a little more
than 40 hours as of late Tuesday, local time.

A wintry storm early Monday gripped the Barren Ground of Canada
northwest of Hudson`s Bay. In Nunavut, winds rose to 55 to 65 mph at
Kangiqsliniq (Rankin Inlet) amidst whiteouts and with wind chill
readings between 15 and 20 degrees below zero.

Rains that began last weekend lingered through Tuesday at Coffs
Harbour, New South Wales, Australia. Instigated by a stubborn coastal
storm, rainfall rose to 6.2 inches as of late Tuesday evening, local
time. October's mean rainfall is 3.8 inches.

The week began very stormy over portions of Iceland. On Heimaey
Island, Vestmannaeyjar was buffeted by steady winds blowing 45-70 mph
Monday to early Tuesday at temperatures at or slightly below freezing.
The story was similar at Hofn I Hornafirdi where winds of 45-60 mph
were clocked right into Tuesday. At Dalatangi, 45-55 mph winds
whipped heavy rain and snow with temperatures in the lower and middle
30s Sunday through early Tuesday.
