Typhoon Tokage is bearing down on the Ryukyu Islands of
southwestern Japan. Late Monday afternoon, EDT, the big storm is
located about 150 miles south-southwest of Naha, Okinawa, Japan.
Tokage is drifting towards the north at 7 mph packing highest
sustained winds of about 105 mph. Tuesday and Tuesday night, local
time, the worst of Tokage will strike the island archipelago; later,
Tokage is forecast to strike the mainland of Japan beginning in the
southwest.
Typhoon Nock-Ten is plying the western North Pacific Ocean near
the central Caroline Islands. Late Monday afternoon, EDT, Nock-Ten is
380 miles southeast of Agana, Guam, and 255 miles northwest of Chuuk.
The typhoon is moving towards the west at 13 mph with highest
sustained winds of more than 95 mph. Nock-Ten is forecast to veer
towards the west-northwest, to strengthen and to directly threaten
Guam on Wednesday, local time.
A wintry storm early Monday gripped the Barren Ground of Canada
northwest of Hudson`s Bay. In Nunavut, winds rose to 55 to 65 mph at
Kangiqsliniq (Rankin Inlet) amidst whiteouts and with wind chill
readings between 15 and 20 degrees below zero.
Unusually heavy rains have pelted parts of New South Wales,
Australia, in recent days. On the coast, Coffs Harbour was soaked by
4.3 inches of rain within 36 hours as of early Tuesday morning, local
time. Saturday night to Sunday morning, rainfall was 0.7 of an inch,
so 5.0 inches of rain fell here within less than two-and-a-half days.
October's mean rainfall is 3.8 inches.
The week began very stormy over portions of Iceland. On Heimaey
Island, Vestmannaeyjar was buffeted by steady winds blowing 45-70 mph
Monday at temperatures at or slightly below freezing. The story was
similar at Hofn I Hornafirdi where winds of 45-60 mph were clocked for
more than 18 hours as of late Monday, local time. At Dalatangi, 45-55
mph winds whipped heavy rain and snow with temperatures in the lower
and middle 30s Sunday through Monday. Liquid equivalent of the rain
and snow was more than 1.9 inches.
