Typhoon Tokage is still growing in strength over the open
Philippine Sea. Late Saturday morning, EDT, the eye of Tokage is 620
miles southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan. Churning towards the
northwest at 9 mph, Tokage owns highest sustained winds above 135
mph. For another two days or so, the eye of Tokage should be over
open seas; however, its outer winds and rains will invade the Ryukyu
Islands and the southwestern mainland of Japan.
A tropical storm, not yet named, is north of the eastern Caroline
Islands. Late Saturday morning, EDT, the storm is located 320 miles
northeast of Chuuk, Micronesia. It is heading towards the west at 14
mph with highest sustained winds of 45 mph. Potential is good for
this storm to deepen markedly, perhaps to typhoon strength, within
the next two days as the storm follows a path towards the west-
northwest.
Wide, sharp swings in temperature are fitting of the transition
seasons at the heart of the continents. Take Russia`s vast swath of
Asia near the Kazakhstan border, where Karasuk warmed to 71 degrees
Wednesday, and to 67 Thursday. Friday was a blustery 38 degrees with
snow showers, then Saturday dawned wintry with a snow depth of seven
inches.
Strong spring thunderstorms swept over the Pampas of Argentina
late Friday. At Rosario, thunderstorm gusts topped 60 mph. Gusts
above 50 mph were clocked at Ezeiza, near Buenos Aires. Farther east,
thunderstorms unloaded torrential rains with 4.3 inches pelting Paso
de los Libres, and 4.9 inches in nearby Mercedes, Uruguay.
Heavy rains soaked the Pais Vascos of northern Spain Friday into
Saturday. At Donostia-San Sebastian, rainfall was 2.6 inches
Springtime heat has been even higher than normal in Brazil's
interior northeast this week. In Caxias, for example, daily highs were
103 to 104 degrees, Tuesday through Friday. Nearby, Teresina set highs
between 101 and 104 degrees Tuesday through Friday. Average highs in
these two locations are in the middle 90s during October.
