October 15, 2004 5:56 p.m.

Typhoon Tokage is a big, strong typhoon with plenty of room for
further growth over the open Philippine Sea. Late Friday afternoon,
EDT, the core of Tokage is 560 miles northwest of Yap, Micronesia; it
is still more than 800 miles southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan. The
typhoon is bearing towards the northwest at a sluggish 5 mph, but with
the fury of sustained winds near 115 mph. For at least another two to
three days, Tokage should be well away from land as it heads towards
the northwest; further strengthening is indicated.

Far to the east of Tokage, a tropical depression has yet to gain
storm status. Late Friday afternoon, EDT, the depression is north of
the eastern Caroline Islands some 280 miles north-northeast of
Pohnpei, Micronesia. The low is drifting towards the west at 3 mph
with highest sustained winds of 35 mph. An overall path towards the
west-northwest is still forecast, as is the cyclone's rise to tropical
storm status.

Thursday was even colder than usual on far northern Canada's
Ellesmere Island. At Eureka, a morning high of minus-17 degrees was
set as the temperature dipped 25 degrees below zero by evening.
At mid-October, this remote outpost has an average daily high of 0
degrees and a mean daily low of minus-13. Another far-northern
island, Ellef Ringnes, has also hosted harsh cold seemly, at least, to
befit winter rather than fall. At Isachsen, temperatures 5 to 10
degrees below zero teamed with winds of 35 to 45 mph Thursday night.
Grinding these numbers through the wind chill calculator yields chill
readings near 40 degrees below zero.

Rainfall of 1.2 inches, mostly Thursday night, was more than
enough for Lethbridge, Alberta, to exceed their average monthly
rainfall of 0.7 of an inch.

Late week downpours soddened some South Pacific Islands. On
France's Wallis Island, for instance, rainfall was 4.7 inches within
24 hours Thursday to Friday at the Hihifo airport in the north. On the
other side of the Date Line, meantime, Pago Pago, Tutuila, was doused
by 3.2 inches of rain within a day-and-a-half.

Springtime heat has been even higher than normal in Brazil's
interior northeast this week. In Caxias, for example, highs were 103,
103 and 104 degrees, respectively, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
At midafternoon Friday, the temperature was up to 102 degrees. Nearby,
Teresina set highs between 101 and 104 degrees Tuesday through Friday.
Average highs in these two locations are in the middle 90s during
October.
