Tokage is a big and strengthening typhoon. Late Thursday
afternoon, EDT, the core of Tokage is over the open Philippine Sea 415
miles north-northwest of Yap, Micronesia. The storm is heading towards
the northwest at 7 mph packing highest sustained winds near 105 mph.
Tokage is forecast to be a powerful, dangerous typhoon over open
waters during the next several days.
A tropical depression near the easternmost Caroline Islands is set
to become the newest named tropical cyclone to churn the western North
Pacific Ocean. Late Thursday afternoon, EDT, the depression is 290
miles north-northeast of Pohnpei, Micronesia. It is headed towards the
northwest at 13 mph with highest sustained winds of 35 mph. An
overall path towards the west-northwest is forecast for the next two
to three days, as is the cyclone's rise to tropical storm status.
Wednesday to Thursday, a northbound cold front played a large role
in instigating soaking showers and thunderstorms over northern
Bolivia. In San Joaquin, the 4.7-inch outpouring of rain matched the
mean rainfall for all of October. Other rainy standouts included Reyes
and San Ignacio with 4.6 and 4.5 inches, respectively. Trinidad
collected 3.7 inches of rain.
Thursday was even colder than usual on far northern Canada's
Ellesmere Island. At Eureka, a morning high of minus-17 degrees was
set as the temperature dipped 24 degrees below zero by midafternoon.
At mid-October, this remote outpost has an average daily high of 0
degrees and a mean daily low of minus-13.
Thundery downpours early Thursday bolstered rainfall of 1.3
inches at the Heathrow airport, west of London, England. These dished
out more than half the month`s average share of rain, which is 2.2
inches.
Sydney, Australia, Thursday had its third day of heat wave in
topping out 99 degrees. This followed a withering 101 degrees set
Wednesday, and 97 degrees Tuesday. The average daily high is about 70
degrees. At mid afternoon, Thursday, a cool change marked by southerly
winds of 30-40 mph swept in; it dropped the temperature to the
average high within one hour.
