October 12, 2004 6:12 p.m.

Tropical Storm Lester has formed near Mexico's southern coast.
Late Tuesday afternoon, EDT, Lester is centered about 50 miles
southeast of Acapulco. Having highest sustained winds near 40 mph, the
storm is drifting towards the northwest at 7 mph. Lester is forecast
to track towards the west-northwest and the west with strengthening
for the next two to three days. Excessively heavy rains and strong,
gusty winds will lashed portions of southern Mexico.

Two-day rainfall as of Monday evening was 7.2 inches at Puerto
Angel, Mexico.

An un-named tropical storm is tracking across the southern
Marianas of the western North Pacific Ocean. Late Tuesday afternoon,
EDT, the storm holds top sustained winds of 40 mph about a center
which is 45 miles north-northwest of Agana, Guam; it is heading
towards the west at 25 mph. Forecasts call for this storm to slowly
strengthen on a west-northwestward and northwestward bearing that
would take it over open waters of the Philippine Sea during the next
2-3 days.

The week got off to a blistering start over much of Australia. In
the desert outback of South Australia, Coober Pedy set respective
highs of 102 and 107 degrees as relative humidity bottomed near 1%
each afternoon. Tuesday, hot northerly winds drew the 100-degree heat
to the shores of the Spencer Gulf at Whyalla. Farther east, also
Tuesday, the southern state of Victoria registered 100-degree heat at
Ouyen, and nearby Mildura, New South Wales was about as hot. Hot, dry
northwesterly winds wafted over the seaside city of Sydney hiking the
temperature to 97 degrees -- 27 degrees above the average daily high.

Early-morning thunderstorms poured 3.3 inches of rain over the
Argentina Pampas at Las Flores.

A fall rain storm dumped 3.5 inches of windswept rain upon
Moncton, New Brunswick, Monday to early Tuesday. The storm lashed
Sable Island with wind gusts above 60 mph.

It's been rainy so far this week on the island of Santa Maria, one
of Portugal's Azores. As of late Tuesday, local time, a little more
than 2.4 inches of rain had fallen here within 48 hours. On average,
about 3.4 inches of rain wet Santa Maria during all of October.

Strong winds whipped New Zealand's Stewart Island Tuesday and
Tuesday night, local time. Sustained winds blew 50-60 mph for more
than twelve hours.
