Tropical Storm Meari has swept through northern Japan and is now
becoming an extra-tropical storm over the open North Pacific Ocean. In
its wake, the storm left rainfall of two to eight inches over much of
the island nation, although more than 34 inches inundated Owase in
southern Honshu. Rains Thursday were heaviest in northern Honshu,
where Aomori picked up 4.8 inches within 24 hours. Meantime, winds
gusting 40 to 60 mph were widespread beginning Wednesday. Speeds above
hurricane strength were clocked Wednesday on Kyushu as Meari first met
the mainland.
Thursday, for a second-straight day, withering 110-degree heat
toasted lands to either side of the Red Sea. In Saudi Arabia,
Yanbu`al Bahr reached 117 degrees; this followed a high of 115
degrees set Wednesday. Jiddah also breached the 110-degree mark
Thursday. In Egypt, sites in the Kharga and Dakhla oases showed
readings of 110 to 112 degrees each afternoon, as did Aswan. Near the
head of the Gulf of Aqaba, neighboring cities of Aqaba, Jordan, and
Elat, Israel, topped out nearly 110 degrees Wednesday and again
Thursday.
Wednesday night, local time, a small and weak tropical low from
the Arabian Sea came ashore in southern Oman. Despite its being
relatively weak, the low unloaded excessive rainfall in this normally
arid area. Soaking thunderstorms hit the city of Salalah and, in doing
so, dropped 4.1 inches of rain. The mean rainfall here during
September is a mere 0.1 of an inch and the annual average is only 4.3
inches. Therefore, about one year's worth of rain fell within about
twelve hours. Nearby, the town of Raysut collected 2.5 inches of rain.
As the remnants of Hurricane Jeanne passed over southeastern
Canada Wednesday to Thursday, they unleashed 2.0 inches of rain and
wind gusts as high as 45 mph on Sable Island, Nova Scotia.
Thursday, Agadir, Morocco, soared to 101 degrees whereas this
oceanside city has an average high of 83 degrees in late September.
