Meari is racing over Japan as a minimal tropical storm. Late
Wednesday afternoon, EDT, the core of Tropical Storm Meari is
straddling the Sea of Japan shores of Honshu about 160 miles
north-northwest of Tokyo. The storm is tracking towards the northeast
at 41 mph with highest sustained winds down to 40 mph. Meari will make
its way over northern Honshu then race out to sea to continue the
transition in character to extra tropical that has already begun.
Meari, first typhoon, then strong tropical storm, dealt
southwestern Japan quite a drubbing Wednesday. Winds topped 70 mph in
gust at Nagasaki and Nyutabaru, and reached 83 mph at Miyazaki; all
are on the island of Kyushu. Rainfall varied widely with amounts
between one and eight inches being well represented. One amount stood
out stunningly: Owase, along the eastern Kii Peninsula of Honshu,
drowned under 34.5 inches of rain within 48 hours. Of this, the main
pulse of Meari`s rains poured forth within 10 hours; this amounted to
two feet or more.
Wednesday brought further excessive heat to southwestern Asia.
Temperatures soared anew to about 100 degrees in southwestern Turkey.
Elat, in southernmost Israel, reached a fiery 109 degrees as nearby
Aqaba, Jordan hit 106. Readings were near 100 degrees at Amman, where
relative humidity dove to 2 percent, and at Dimashq (Damascus),
Syria. Saudi Arabia set at withering 115 degrees at Yanbu`al Bahr.
Egypt shared in the searing heat with 112 degrees at the Kharga
oasis.
Since Saturday, eastern Mexico has had bouts of torrential rain.
Three-day rainfall at Matlapa, along the foot of the Sierra Madre
Oriental, was 10.4 inches.
Windswept rain lashed parts of southern Iceland on Wednesday. Late
in the day, local time, winds blew steadily above 60 mph with heavy
rain falling on the island of Heimaey at Vestmannaeyjar.
A cold front put an end to an early spring heat wave over parts
of South America's midsection Wednesday. In northwestern Paraguay,
for example, highs were 106, 104 and 105 degrees, respectively, on
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at Base 5 "Gral A. Jara". At midafternoon
Wednesday, however, the temperature stood at 69 degrees.
Soaking rains swamped the northwestern tip of Sumatra, Indonesia,
this midweek. At Meulaboh, rainfall was 9.3 inches within 42 hours
while Banda Aceh collected 5.6 inches in only six hours on Wednesday.
