Typhoon Meari is bearing down upon southwestern Japan. Late
Tuesday afternoon, EDT, Meari is located over the East China Sea some
75 miles southwest of Kagoshima, Kyushu, Japan. Meari, its highest
sustained winds near 80 mph, is headed towards the northeast at 15
mph. Meari is forecast to hold its northeastward tack for the next
two days, so it will strike Kyushu Tuesday night, then cross Shikoku
and Honshu Wednesday and Thursday.
Monday and Tuesday, snow blanketed the Aldan Highlands of eastern
Siberian Russia. Snowfall was 10 to 12 inches over Chulman and
Nagornyy.
Heavy showers and thunderstorms drenched parts of far northern
Argentina Sunday to Tuesday afternoon. In Corrientes, rainfall was 4.4
inches, thereby besting significantly September's mean rainfall of
2.9 inches.
Tuesday was unusually hot in far southwestern Asia. Southern and
western Turkey, for example, registered 100-degree heat, in some
cases, right to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Antalya spiked to
105 degrees and nearby Finike was as hot as 102 degrees whereas both
locations have an average high in the middle 80s late in September.
Much above-average heat was also felt in parts of the Middle East.
Damascus, the Syrian capital, burned with a 102-degree high that was
almost 15 degrees above average. Amman, Jordan, reached at least 99
degrees versus the 85-degree mean high for the date.
