September 27, 2004 5:14 p.m.

Typhoon Meari is still churning the East China Sea. Late Monday
afternoon, EDT, the eye of Meari is 135 miles northwest of Naha,
Okinawa. Drifting towards the northeast at 7 mph, the typhoon is
packing highest sustained winds of about 100 mph. Meari is forecast to
weaken while making its way towards the northeast. Nearest land along
the forecast path of Meari would be southwestern Japan.

Weekend rains amounted to 7.1 inches over East London, South
Africa.

Downpours washed Colombo, Sri Lanka, Saturday night into Monday
leaving 9.6 inches of rain.

Early snows whitened a stretch of the Siberian heartland Monday.
Barnaul, a city south of Novosibirsk, was blanketed with eight inches
of snow Monday morning.

In eastern Mexico, soaking thunderstorms struck Matlapa on
consecutive evenings Saturday and Sunday. Sunday night's downpours
amounted to almost 4.1 inches. Total rainfall was about 6.7 inches
within 30 hours.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms drenched parts of far northern
Argentina Sunday to Monday. In Corrientes, rainfall was 2.9 inches
from Sunday morning to early afternoon Monday. September's mean
rainfall here is 2.9 inches, so these rains were unusually heavy for
their short duration.
