Sunday, Typhoon Meari has tracked between the Sakishima and
Okinawa islands of Japan, which puts the strong storm over the
southern East China Sea. Late Sunday morning, EDT, Typhoon Meari is
165 miles west of Naha, Okinawa, and 95 miles north-northwest of
Hirara, Miyako Jima, of the Sakishimas. Highest winds about Meari are
above 110 mph; it has slowed to a west-northwestward drift of 5 mph.
Meari is forecast to swing towards the northeast within the day, so
southwestern Japan may be the next land mass in the path of the
storm.
Sunday dawned with a winter storm gripping Zugspitze, Germany's
highest mountain, for a fourth-straight day. As of Sunday morning,
local time, snow lay 22 inches deep at the weather observatory, which
is located some 9700 feet above sea level. All of this snow had
fallen since the storm began; thus, it made for a fitting start to
winter over the high northern Alps.
The late week has been sodden with rain over southern South
Africa. East London was doused with 6.1 inches of rain as of early
Sunday morning whereas Umtata registered 4.7 inches in the two-day
storm.
Late-day thunderstorms washed Chihuahua, Mexico, with 1.8 inches
of rain.
At Tangjung Selor, Kalimantan, Indonesia, torrential rains on
consecutive days left rainfall of 10.9 inches as of Sunday.
Downpours that pelted Colombo, Sri Lanka, Saturday night into
Sunday left 6.3 inches of rain.
The latter half of this week saw the first widespread snows over
Russia's Siberian hinterland. Light to moderate snows were observed
from the tundra and the taiga southward towards the relatively
populous corridor of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Heat more typical of summer than of early autumn baked parts of
Bulgaria and Greece on Saturday. In Bulgaria, Veliko Tarnovo set a
high of 87 degrees while Sofia had a high of 81, more than 10 degrees
above average. In Greece, the 90-degree mark was reached at Larisa.
Thunderstorms ahead of a cold front dropped temperatures sharply in
western Bulgaria late Saturday and also unleashed heavy rain and
strong winds.
