September 25, 2004 4:14 p.m.

Late Saturday afternoon, EDT, powerful Typhoon Meari was closing
in on Okinawa. Wind gusts at this time were already 60 mph across the
island, with the storm's greatest fury, sustained winds of 125 mph,
still to some. After lashing Okinawa, Meari may take a turn to the
northeast, threatening the mainland of southwestern Japan.

Friday and Saturday, high winds raked southwestern Iceland. The
height of the storm Saturday saw wind gusts to 60 mph in Reykjavik,
and to between 70 and 80 mph at nearby Keflavik.

This week, winter begin atop Zugspitze, Germany's highest
mountain. A three-day storm began early Friday to blanket the site
of the mountain observatory. As of early Saturday afternoon, local
time, snow here lay 16 inches deep. The observatory is at 9700 feet
above sea level.

Early Saturday, high winds of a fearsome Antarctic blizzard lashed
the northernmost Antarctica Peninsula along with nearby islands. On
the Trinity Peninsula, winds of a steady 70 mph swept the Esperanza
station of Argentina. Another station in the area, Bernardo
O`Higgins, showed whiteouts, 65-mph winds and temperatures of single
digits.

Heat more typical of summer than of early autumn baked parts of
Bulgaria and Greece on Saturday. In Bulgaria, Veliko Tarnovo set a
high of 87 degrees while Sofia had a high of 81, more than 10 degrees
above average. In Greece, the 90-degree mark was reached at Larisa.
Thunderstorms ahead of a cold front dropped temperatures sharply in
western Bulgaria late Saturday and also unleashed heavy rain and
strong winds.
