September 24, 2004 5:25 p.m.

Powerful Typhoon Meari is tracking steadily over the Philippine
Sea. Late Friday afternoon, EDT, the eye of Meari is 395 miles
southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan. Packing highest sustained winds of
nearly 140 mph, the typhoon is heading towards the northwest at 11-12
mph. At least another two days of northwesterly movement are
indicated; if so, Meari will threaten some of Japan's Ryukyu Islands,
including Okinawa, before the end of the weekend.

Thursday was a third-straight day of 100-degree heat in Cordoba,
Spain. Highs were 100, 101 and 101 degrees, respectively, Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday whereas average highs in this part of September
are in the middle 80s.

Thursday, Moosonee, Ontario, Canada, topped out 81 degrees, even
though this town near the southern tip of James Bay has an average
high of 55 degrees on September 23rd.

In far northwestern Mexico, Tijuana registered 90-degree heat for
a third-consecutive day on Thursday. This coastal city is typically
moderated by breezes off the Pacific Ocean and has an average high in
the upper 70s in late September.

A heavy, wind-whipped, cold rain along with wet snow soaked
Austria's Feuerkogel Mountain Wednesday to Friday. Rain and wet snow
were equivalent to about four inches as winds roared 40 to 60 mph.
Temperatures climbed from the 30s to the upper 40s, then sank back to
the mid 30s as the storm wound down.

Friday, rainfall was 2.0 inches within twelve hours at Trieste,
Italy. This soaking, which was punctuated by thunder on occasion, is a
little less than one-half of September's mean rainfall here.

In southern India, Coimbatore was soaked by almost 3.5 inches of
rain on Friday. Average rainfall here during all of September is
just about 1.5 inches, so these downpours were unusually heavy.
