September 23, 2004 5:12 p.m.

Meari has become a strong typhoon over the central Philippine Sea.
Late Thursday afternoon, EDT, Typhoon Meari is wielding top sustained
winds of 120 mph about an eye which is 675 miles southeast of Naha,
Okinawa, Japan. The typhoon is heading west-northwestward at 9 mph.
Meari is forecast to maintain a northwestward bearing over open seas
for another 48 hours. Thereafter, the storm is seen threatening
Japan's Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa.

Thursday was a third-straight day of 100-degree heat in Cordoba,
Spain. Highs were 100, 101 and 101 degrees, respectively, Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday whereas average highs in this part of September
are in the middle 80s.

Thursday, Moosonee, Ontario, Canada, was near 80 degrees at
midafternoon despite the fact that this town near the southern tip of
James Bay has an average high of 55 degrees on September 23rd.

In far northwestern Mexico, Tijuana registered 90-degree heat for
a third-consecutive day on Thursday. This coastal city is typically
moderated by breezes off the Pacific Ocean and has an average high in
the upper 70s in late September.

A heavy, wind-whipped and cold rain soaked Austria's Feuerkogel
Mountain Wednesday to Thursday. Within 24 hours, rainfall was 3.3
inches as temperatures slowly rose from the middle 30s to the upper
40s. Winds blew steadily between 40 and 60 mph during much of the
storm. Set more than 5,300 feet above sea level, Feuerkogel is home to
a popular ski resort.

Parts of Morocco withered under abnormal heat on Wednesday.
Indeed, this would have been a very hot day during the height of
summer, yet alone the first day of autumn at Rabat. This coastal city
soared to 108 degrees whereas September's average daily high is 80.
Inland, both Marrakech and Nouasser were far hotter than average in
recording highs of 105 degrees.

Soaking rains hit portions of Norway this midweek. On the shores
of the Norwegian Sea, for example, rainfall was 4.0 inches within 60
hours to late Thursday, local time, in the town of Orland. This
drenching was a sizeable amount of September's mean rainfall here
which is 4.9 inches.

The islands of the English Channel had very windy weather
Wednesday and Thursday. At Jersey, the wind was sustained at over 25
mph for a 24-hour period. At times, sustained winds were as high as
33 mph, and gusts reached 44 mph. The wind was accompanied by
temperatures stuck near 60 degrees, and drizzle at times.
