Meari has gained typhoon status, albeit barely so. Late Wednesday
afternoon, EDT, Typhoon Meari is over the open Philippine Sea about
530 miles west-northwest of Guam. Drifting towards the northwest at 9
mph, the storm now has highest sustained winds of 75 mph. Meari is
forecast to strengthen further while making its way to the northwest
for the next two to three days.
Warming chinook winds have done away with late summer snows that
blanketed northeastern British Columbia, Canada, last weekend. As
late as Monday morning, snow still lay seven inches deep at Fort
Saint John. Tuesday, winds of 30-40 mph and the high of 60 degrees
made short work of whatever lingered. Warming also reached south
along the foot of the Rockies to Calgary. Whereas Monday's high was a
chilly 44 degrees, Tuesday's high of 70 degrees ranked it warmest
afternoon of the month thus far.
Parts of Morocco withered under abnormal heat on Wednesday.
Indeed, this would have been a very hot day during the height of
summer, yet alone the first day of autumn at Rabat. This coastal city
soared to 108 degrees whereas September's average daily high is 80.
Inland, both Marrakech and Nouasser were far hotter than average in
recording highs of 105 degrees.
Soaking rains hit portions of Norway this midweek. On the shores
of the Norwegian Sea, for example, rainfall was 3.7 inches within 36
hours to late Wednesday, local time, in the town of Orland. This
drenching was a sizeable amount of September's mean rainfall here
which is 4.9 inches.
