A tropical depression has taken shape over the western North
Pacific Ocean near the Northern Mariana Islands. Late Monday
afternoon, EDT, the core of this depression was pegged at 205 miles
west of Agana, Guam. Drifting towards the west-northwest at 14 mph, it
held highest sustained winds of 35 mph. This depression is forecast to
become the next named tropical cyclone for the western North Pacific
Basin as it makes its way towards the northwest over the Philippine
Sea.
Rains linked to the aforementioned tropical depression were quite
heavy on Guam. Rainfall was almost 4.8 inches from Sunday to early
Tuesday morning, local time. This drenching lifted the year-to-date
rainfall tally above 115 inches, a mark that is almost 60 inches above
average.
Sunday, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, spiked to 88 degrees. This
reading was 25 degrees above average and also a record high for the
date. Moreover, Monday's morning low was 67 degrees, also about 25
degrees above average and even 4 degrees above the mean daily high at
this time of the year.
Sunday into Monday, a severe storm pounded the island of
Newfoundland, Canada, with gales and soaking rains. At Bonavista,
where rainfall was 4.6 inches, steady winds reached at least 55 to 60
mph early Monday. Rainfall at Saint John's was 3.7 inches. Heavy
rains and high winds also reached Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia,
where Sydney picked up 2.2 inches of rain.
Monday, sustained winds at the Mawson station, East Antarctica,
rose to at least 75 mph, and were about 70 miles and above for at
least ten-straight hours. At the time, the temperature slowly rose
above the 10-degree mark.
Cozza Spadaro, in southeastern Sicily, Italy, was drenched with
rainfall amounting to 7.4 inches Sunday night and Monday.
Heavy rains washed northern Vietnam Sunday into Monday. Rainfall
was 6.6 inches at Thanh Hoa, and 6.3 inches at Vinh.
