Hello Everyone,
It has been a very busy afternoon here in Central & Northern Virginia
with the remnants of Hurricane Ivan coming through our area. I had to
take my Mother to a Prosthetics Maker in White Oak, Va which is
Located in Stafford County.
I had brought my Radio Shack Pro-96 Digital Scanner & my Sony
Cybershot F717 with me just in case 7 what a good thing it was that I
did too! At Approximately 4:35pm we were departing the doctors office
in my Dodge Ram 2500 in the location of Deacon Road and Town &
Country Road when I noticed a Large rotating cloud in the distance
from my location.
I quickly made a u-turn and waiting on Town & Country road as it
approached my location. Upon closer viewing it was clear that the
cloud approaching me was actually a very large Tornado. From a
distance & photos that I took the first tornado of three that I
caught today was a massive one.
At the time I was alerted the the Tornado warning for Massaponax, Va
which is approx about 7 miles directly South of my location. I was
then also alerted by tone that a second Tornado (My Location) had
been seen on the ground.
The Tornado that was on the ground quickly lifted above ground as it
crossed a shopping center under construction. The storm couldn't make
up its mind and again touched down for a mere 5 to 10 seconds before
lifting again.
The storm crossed Deacon Road and I was alerted by a bystander that
the tornado had again touched down. At this point I was shooting
Video with the F717, High Quality MPEG style. I have approx 42 second
clip of the tornado on the ground at this point.
As I continued to film a Second Tornado formed just to the East of
the first Tornado. I hopped in the truck & headed towards I-95 at
Falmouth, Va. Confirmed Reports of 2 Tornadoes on the ground side by
side is something I will never forget seeing.
I promptly got stuck in Traffic briefly before making it to I-95.
While on I-95 Crossing the hills over I-95 you could see one of the
tornadoes on the ground as it crossed Interstate 95 at the 140.1 Mile
Marker. Trees were snapped in halve and some were lifted right out of
the ground & dropped on both sides on the highway at the location.
Unfortunely there was a person who had a very large pine tree dropped
on top of their car at the SB side of the 140.1 MM. In all I caught 3
Tornadoes today, I also caught 2 last week with Frances in
Garrisonville, Va.
On a side note tornadoes also were caught in Orange, Culpeper,
Madison, Fairfax, Fauquier, Stafford, Spotsylvania, Loudoun, and I
believe Clarke or Warren Counties in Virginia. There were also plenty
more that I can't recall offhand.
I spoke with my storm chase partner & friend Steve Minghini by phone
earlier tonight &he reported a tornado had touched down about a mile
from his residence with at least 1 house blown apart &a major
accident on I-81 that where a tornado had crossed that interstate as
well.
If anyone is interested including News & or other organizations for
Photos & or Video footage please feel free to email me.
Thanks,
Jason Breakiron
