August 30, 2004 6:03 p.m.

Typhoon Chaba tore through the southwest mainland of Japan on
Monday, weakened and is now racing northeastward over the rest of the
nation as a tropical storm. Late Monday afternoon, EDT, the core of
Tropical Storm Chaba is over the Sea of Japan about 240 miles
northwest of Tokyo. Packing highest sustained winds near 70 mph, the
storm is whisking towards the northeast at 36 mph. Chaba is on the
fast track to become an extra-tropical storm, but it will reach the
southern Sea of Okhotsk as a minimal tropical storm within 18-24 hours
after hitting far-northern Japan.

The southwestern island of Kyushu, together with the northern
Ryukyu Islands, bore the brunt of Chaba's encounter with Japan. Near
the big storm's landfall, wind gusts of 75 to 105 mph were widely
observed, Kanoya registering some of the highest of these. Rainfall
of 4 to 8 inches was widespread including 7.5 inches at Kagoshima. On
the island of Tanegashima, rainfall was about 15 inches, mostly
within 24 hours.

Typhoon Songda is a strengthening storm over the western North
Pacific Ocean. Late Monday afternoon, EDT, Songda is located 295 miles
east-northeast of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. The storm is
headed towards the west-northwest at 12 mph with highest sustained
winds of 110 mph. A heading towards the northwest is forecast for the
next two days or so. At midweek, Songda is likely to pass over the
northernmost Marianas, potentially as a severe typhoon.

Late Monday, Georgette is a weakening tropical depression far to
the southwest of southern Baja California, Mexico.

A new tropical depression is plying Pacific waters off
southwestern Mexico. Late Monday afternoon, EDT, the depression has
highest sustained winds of 35 mph about a center which is 400 miles
southwest of Acapulco, Mexico; it is moving west-northwestward at 7
mph. This cyclone is forecast to soon become a named tropical storm
and to head generally towards the northwest over open seas during the
next 36-48 hours.

Recent days have been unusually hot along some stretches of
Atlantic coast in Morocco. Agadir soared to 108 degrees Monday after
setting highs of 107 and 104 degrees, respectively, Sunday and
Saturday. Highs in Safi varied between 101 and 104 degrees on these
three days. Both sites are normally moderated by ocean breezes and
have average highs in the middle 80s at this time of the year.

The island of Bach Long Vi, Vietnam, had 28 inches of rain within
three days ended Monday evening, local time. The island is in the
Gulf of Tonkin.
