Sprawling Typhoon Chaba is looming at sea south of southern
Japan. Saturday afternoon, EDT, Chaba is wielding highest
sustained winds of 125 mph about an eye which is 260 miles south-
southeast of Kagoshima, Kyushu, Japan. The typhoon is heading towards
the west-northwest at 10 mph. Chaba is forecast to cross the shores
of mainland southwestern Japan Sunday night into Monday, local time,
bringing damaging winds and flooding rains to Kyushu and the
northern Ryukyu Islands.
Recent rainfall owing to Chaba's outer bands has been 8.7 inches
over Hachijo Jima, an island about 180 miles south of Tokyo.
Tropical Storm Songda is over the Pacific Ocean near the western
Marshall Islands. Saturday afternoon, EDT, Songda is located about
110 miles north-northwest of Enewetak Atoll. The storm is tracking
towards the west-northwest at 13 mph with top sustained winds of nearly 70.
Songda is forecast to follow a path towards the west-northwest over the
next two to three days. Once away from Enewetak, the storm will be
over open seas as it gains typhoon status.
Heavy rains indirectly linked to a tropical depression, now
dissipating, soaked Guam Thursday and Friday. A total of 4.4 inches of
rain fell at the international airport on these two days. August,
indeed much of 2004, has been unusually rainy here. The latest soaking
raised the monthly tally to 34.8 inches whereas August's mean rainfall
is 13.6 inches. Through Friday, more than 106 inches of rain have
fallen here since the start of the year; this is about 60 inches above
average! In June, a record-setting 38 inches of rain fell.
Tropical Storm Georgette is drifting away from the Revillagigedo
Islands far to the west of Mexico. Early Saturday morning, EDT,
Georgette is located about 80 miles southwest of Clarion, in the
Revillagigedo Islands, and some 500 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas,
Mexico. Maximum sustained are down to about 50 mph as the storm makes
its way towards the west at 11 mph. Georgette is seen heading mostly
towards the west and weakening over the next two to three days.
It's been a "warm" month so far at the Vostok station, Antarctica
-- more than six degrees above average through Friday the 27th.
Friday's morning low of 109.8 degrees below zero made it the coldest
of the month thus far.
Early Saturday, local time, an outburst of torrential rain
amounted to 8.6 inches at Gorakhpur in northern India.
Friday, western Turkey sweltered. A wide swathe saw 100 to 105
degrees; Balikesir reached 106 degrees.
Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland had a stormy start to their weekend.
Saturday morning saw moderate rain and winds sustained at 56 mph from
the east.
