Typhoon Chaba remains a big and powerful storm over the northern
Philippine Sea. Late Friday afternoon, EDT, Chaba is wielding highest
sustained winds of 130 mph about an eye which is 365 miles southeast
of Miyazaki, Kyushu, Japan. The typhoon is drifting northwestward at
only 2 mph. Chaba is forecast to move very slowly towards the west and
northwest with only slight weakening during the next 36-48 hours. On
this course, Chaba would deal Japan's northern Ryukyu Islands a
long-lasting and devastating blow Saturday to Sunday. By Sunday, the
storm's core may be threatening the island of Kyushu and the rest of
southwestern mainland Japan.

Chaba's outer rain bands have already drenched Hachijo Jima, a
Japanese island about 180 miles south of Tokyo. Twenty-four hour
rainfall ended Friday evening, local time, was 6.2 inches.

A tropical depression is bearing down upon the Northern Mariana
Islands of the western North Pacific Ocean. Late Friday afternoon,
EDT, the depression, which earlier was a tropical storm, is centered
240 miles northeast of Agana, Guam, where it holds top sustained winds
of 35 mph. The depression is forecast to change little in strength on
a west-northwestward heading during the next 24-48 hours. On this
path, the depression will cross the Marianas Friday night and Saturday
bringing further heavy rain and strong winds to some islands,
especially those to the north of Guam.

Heavy rains indirectly linked to the aforementioned tropical
depression soaked Guam Thursday and Friday. A total of 4.4 inches of
rain fell at the international airport on these two days. August,
indeed much of 2004, has been unusually rainy here. The latest soaking
raised the monthly tally to 34.8 inches whereas August's mean rainfall
is 13.6 inches. Through Friday, more than 106 inches of rain have
fallen here since the start of the year; this is about 60 inches above
average! In June, a record-setting 38 inches of rain fell.

Meantime, a new tropical storm has come to life over the western
North Pacific Ocean near the eastern Caroline Islands. This un-named
storm has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph as of late afternoon
Friday, EDT. Centered 185 miles east of Eniwetok Atoll, the storm is
moving west-northwestward at 11-12 mph. This cyclone is forecast to
strengthen meaningfully on a northwestward bearing during upcoming
days, but it will be passing over mainly open seas through at least
Sunday.

Tropical Storm Georgette continues to ply the waters of the
eastern North Pacific Ocean. Late Friday afternoon, EDT, Georgette is
located 75 miles east-northeast of Clarion, one of Mexico's
Revillagigedo Islands, and 380 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas,
Mexico. With maximum sustained near 60 mph, the storm is moving
towards the west-northwest at 17 mph. Georgette is seen taking on a
westward heading that would take it over wide open seas during
upcoming days.

A fierce windstorm lashed Australia's Mawson base on the coast of
East Antarctica Wednesday through Thursday night, local time.
Sustained winds blew 70 mph or greater for about 27 hours and peaked
at 100 mph early Thursday.
