August 26, 2004 6:23 p.m.

Although it has weakened, Typhoon Chaba remains a big and powerful
storm. Late Thursday afternoon, EDT, Chaba owns highest sustained
winds of 125 mph about an eye which is 455 miles east of Naha,
Okinawa, Japan. Chaba is spinning north-northwestward at 10 mph. Chaba
is forecast to slowly move towards the northwest and to gradually
weaken during the next 2-3 days. On this course, the storm will
threaten southwestern Japan by Saturday night or Sunday.

A new tropical storm is gathering strength over the western North
Pacific Ocean east of the Northern Mariana Islands. This un-named
tropical storm holds top sustained winds of 40 mph as of late Thursday
afternoon, EDT. Centered 390 miles east of Agana, Guam, the storm is
drifting west-northwestward at 4-5 mph. This cyclone is forecast to
drift more-or-less towards the west and to slowly intensify during the
next 48 hours. The storm will probably pass over the Marianas, perhaps
near Guam, by Saturday.

Late Thursday afternoon, EDT, Tropical Depression Aere is
dissipating over southeastern China about 75 miles north of Hong Kong.
As a typhoon, Aere lashed Japan's southernmost Ryukyu Islands and
northern Taiwan before bringing its wrath to eastern mainland China on
Wednesday.

An indirect effect of Typhoon Aere was an increase of the
southwest monsoon in northern Philippines. In western Luzon, the
highland city of Baguio was drenched by 12.9 inches of rain within 42
hours from Monday morning to Tuesday night, local time. Laoag also saw
plenty of rain on Thursday as nearly 10 inches of rain fell during the
day.

Two tropical depressions over the eastern North Pacific Ocean are
rapidly dissipating, but a new tropical storm has come to life over
the region. Tropical Storm Georgette has maximum sustained winds of 40
mph as of late Thursday afternoon, EDT. Centered 320 miles to the
southeast of Isla Socorro, one of Mexico's Revillagigedo Islands, and
385 miles south-southwest of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Georgette is
moving west-northwestward at 14 mph. Georgette is forecast to
strengthen on a west-northwestward and westward heading during the
next 36-48 hours. This course would be over mainly open seas.

A fierce windstorm lashed Australia's Mawson base on the coast of
East Antarctica Wednesday through Thursday night, local time.
Sustained winds blew 70 mph or greater for about 27 hours and peaked
at 100 mph early Thursday.
