Super Typhoon Chaba is churning the Philippine Sea with top
sustained winds of 165 mph and highest gusts of 200 mph as of late
Wednesday afternoon, EDT. Chaba's eye is 335 miles west-southwest of
Iwo Jima, one of Japan's Volcano Islands; it is moving towards the
north-northwest at 9 mph. This powerful storm is forecast to maintain
this heading during the next 2-3 days while slowly weakening. Chaba
may threaten Japan's Ryukyu Islands or southwestern mainland Japan by
Saturday or Sunday.
Having already pounded Japan's southernmost Ryukyu Islands and
northern Taiwan, Typhoon Aere landed on the Chinese mainland near
Hanjiang on Wednesday. Late Wednesday afternoon, EDT, Aere is centered
75 miles west of Xiamen where its maximum sustained winds have dipped
to 75 mph; it is moving southwestward at 15 mph. Now inland, Aere will
weaken quickly and move southwestward toward Hong Kong during the next
24 hours. Though its winds will rapidly subside, the cyclone will
continue to unleash flooding rains.
Flooding rains from Aere hit northern Taiwan this midweek. In
T'aipei, rainfall was 13.0 inches. P'engchia Yu and T'aichung were
drenched by 10.2 and 10.1 inches of rain, respectively. Aere then took
its stormy weather to the Chinese mainland where rainfall, as of early
Thursday morning, local time, was 8.4 inches at Fuding and 3.9 inches
at Pingtan on Haitan Dao.
An indirect effect of Typhoon Aere has been an increase of the
southwest monsoon in northern Philippines. In western Luzon, the
highland city of Baguio was drenched by 12.9 inches of rain within 42
hours from Monday morning to Tuesday night, local time.
Tropical Depression Estelle is passing well to the south of the
Hawaiian Islands. Late Wednesday afternoon, EDT, Estelle is centered
395 miles south of Hilo, Hawai'i, where the depression holds top
sustained winds near 30 mph. Estelle will maintain a westward bearing
over the central North Pacific Ocean during the next 2-3 days and it
should dissipate by Saturday.
An un-named tropical depression, meantime, is plying the waters of
the eastern North Pacific Ocean. This depression is located 1190 miles
west of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, as of late Wednesday afternoon, EDT;
it holds highest sustained winds near 30 mph. This cyclone will remain
weak while moving westward over open seas during the next 2-3 days.
Frank is a weakening tropical storm over the eastern North Pacific
Ocean. Frank's maximum sustained winds are down to 45 mph as of late
Wednesday afternoon, EDT. Centered 525 miles west of Cabo San Lucas,
Mexico, the storm is moving westward at 8 mph. Frank is forecast to
weaken further during the next 2-3 days on a westward path over wide
open ocean.
A fierce windstorm lashed Australia's Mawson base on the coast of
East Antarctica Wednesday through Wednesday night, local time.
Sustained winds had blown 85-95 mph for 10 or more hours as of early
Thursday morning with temperatures hovering near minus-5 degrees. Snow
from the ground was whipped into blinding whiteouts.
San Julian, Argentina, saw impressive winds and quite a chilly
day Tuesday as the high only topped out at 36 degrees. And as the
winds blew around a strong storm over the southern Atlantic Ocean,
the temperature of 33 degrees combined with nearly 50 mph winds to
make the wind chill feel in the low teens.
