Super Typhoon Chaba is pulling away from the Marianas having
pounded many of those islands during the weekend and on Monday. Late
Monday afternoon, EDT, Chaba is over the Philippine Sea where it holds
highest sustained winds of 175 mph about an eye which is 380 miles
northwest of Agana, Guam, and 520 miles south of Iwo Jima, one of
Japan's Volcano Islands. The powerful storm is moving towards the
northwest at 13 mph. Chaba will ply mainly open seas on a heading
towards the northwest during the next 24-48 hours, but outer rain
clouds swirling about the big storm will spread to the Volcano
Islands. Ultimately, Chaba might threaten Japan, albeit in a weaker
state.
Though its eye passed to the north, Chaba dealt a fairly severe
blow to Guam Sunday to Monday, local time. Winds gusted 50-60 mph here
for the better part of 15 hours. Rainfall Sunday through Monday was
9.3 inches. These downpours also raised the yearly rainfall tally to
98 inches which is almost 13 inches above the annual average despite
the fact the more than four months remain in 2004.
Typhoon Aere is lashing Japan's southernmost Ryukyu Islands. Late
Monday afternoon, EDT, Aere is wielding top sustained winds of 85 mph
about an eye which is 20 miles north-northeast of Ishigaki Shima, and
210 miles east-southeast of Taipei, Taiwan. The storm is moving
north-northwestward at 9 mph. Aere is forecast to turn left, or
westward, and pass over or near northern Taiwan during the next 24-36
hours. Thereafter, a landfall along the nearby Chinese mainland is
forecast.
Over the central North Pacific Ocean, Estelle remains a tropical
depression far from any land. With maximum sustained winds near 35
mph, Estelle is centered 650 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawai'i as
of late Monday afternoon, EDT. This cyclone is forecast to remain a
depression on an open-water, westward heading during upcoming days. On
this trajectory, Estelle would pass south of the Hawaiian Islands at
midweek.
Hurricane Frank came to life quickly over the eastern North
Pacific Ocean on Monday. Late in the afternoon, EDT, maximum sustained
winds around Frank's core are 75 mph. Centered 115 miles east of Isla
Clarion, one of Mexico's Revillagigedo Islands, and 370 miles to the
southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, the storm is moving towards the
northwest at 14 mph. Frank is forecast to strengthen meaningfully
during the next 24 hours, then to gradually weaken during mid and late
week, all while maintaining a northwestward heading over mainly open
seas.
A new tropical depression is also gathering steam over the eastern
North Pacific Ocean, but it is far from land. Late Monday afternoon,
EDT, the depression is centered 960 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas,
Mexico, where it holds highest sustained winds of 30 mph; it is
drifting northeastward at 2 mph. Forecasts call for this cyclone to
gain tropical storm strength by Tuesday, then to take on a
northwestward and westward bearing over open seas through midweek.
Over the past few days in Bhopal, India, heavy rainfall has made
for quite a wet time in the city. With a monthly average of 12.13
inches during the month of August, the more than 5.5 inches during
the day Monday helped to dent the average rainfall quite well. And
over the past 3 days, more than 7 inches has fallen, making for quite
a wet weekend in the city.
Over the past 2 days, Yosu, South Korea, has seen 8.25 inches
with the heavy rainfall over the area. This is in strong contrast to
the 6.18 inches that typically fall for the entire month of August
over the city.
