Friday dawned frosty cold on Canada's prairies from much of
Saskatchewan to southern Manitoba. Key Lake, northern Saskatchewan,
dipped to 25 degrees versus an August mean daily low of 47. In the
south, the provincial capital, Regina, shivered with a 31-degree
minimum whereas the average low for the date is 49. Temperatures fell
into the upper 20s and lower 30s in many areas of southern Manitoba as
well. Winnipeg broke a 109-year-old record while dropping to 32
degrees Friday morning.
Tokyo, Japan baked with extreme heat Friday. The temperature
soared to 98 degrees, after a sultry low temperature of 84 degrees.
This was even worse than Thursday, which had a low of 84 and high of
95. Typical summer temperatures are 85 for highs and 74 for lows, but
this summer has been anything but typical. Many days have had high
temperatures near 90 degrees, and low temperatures barely dipping
below 80.
Rains linked indirectly and directly to Typhoon Megi swamped South
Korea at early and mid week. Most of the country was hit by rainfall
of 5-10 inches from Monday to Thursday, and some areas were soaked by
even heavier downpours. Taegwallyong was drenched by 15.0 inches of
rain during this time. Other rainy standouts included: Wando with 14.8
inches, Sokch'o with 13.4 inches, Kangnung with 13.3 and Kwangju with
13.2 inches.
Chaba has become a typhoon over the western North Pacific Ocean.
Typhoon Chaba holds highest sustained winds of 75 mph about a center
which is 590 miles east-northeast of Agana, Guam, as of late Friday
afternoon, EDT. The storm is moving westward at 15 mph. Chaba is
forecast to strengthen further on a west-northwestward heading during
the next 24-48 hours. On this bearing the typhoon would cross the
Northern Mariana Islands Saturday night to Sunday, EDT, with the
cyclone's core passing north of Guam.
Tropical Storm Aere continues to ply the waters of the Philippine
Sea. Late Friday afternoon, EDT, Aere is centered 750 miles southeast
of Naha, Okinawa, Japan, where it is wielding top sustained winds of
65 mph. During the next 48 hours, Aere is forecast to move generally
towards the northwest over open waters and strengthen into a typhoon.
Ultimately, Aere could become a powerful typhoon.
Over the eastern North Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Estelle has
strengthened. Late Friday afternoon, EDT, Estelle is centered about
1175 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawai'i. With top sustained winds
of 50 mph, the storm is moving towards the west-northwest at 13 mph.
Estelle is forecast to intensify further during the next 48 hours on a
west-northwestward path over open seas.
