August 19, 2004 6:12 p.m.

Rains linked indirectly and directly to Typhoon Megi swamped South
Korea at early and mid week. Most of the country was hit by rainfall
of 5-10 inches from Monday to Thursday, and some areas were soaked by
even heavier downpours. Taegwallyong was drenched by 15.0 inches of
rain during this time. Other rainy standouts included: Wando with 14.8
inches, Sokch'o with 13.4 inches, Kangnung with 13.3 and Kwangju with
13.2 inches.

Tropical Storm Chaba is strengthening fairly rapidly over the
western North Pacific Ocean. Late Thursday afternoon, EDT, Chaba has
top sustained winds of almost 60 mph. Centered about 935 miles east of
Agana, Guam, the storm is moving west-northwestward at 9 mph. Chaba is
forecast to grow into a typhoon while bearing to the west-northwest
over open seas during the next 48 hours. Thereafter, the storm might
threaten the Northern Mariana Islands.

A tropical depression, meantime, is plying the waters of the
Philippine Sea. The depression is centered 965 miles east of Manila,
Philippines, and 1030 miles southeast of Naha, Okinawa, Japan, as of
late Thursday afternoon, EDT. With highest sustained winds of 35 mph,
the depression is moving northwestward at 10 mph. The cyclone is
forecast to slowly strengthen on a northwestward heading over open
seas during the next 48-72 hours.

The eastern North Pacific Ocean is also home to a tropical
depression. Late Thursday afternoon, EDT, this depression is centered
nearly 1500 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawai'i, where it holds
maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. The depression is forecast to soon
acquire tropical storm strength, but it is also projected to steer
clear of any land for at least another three days.

Unusually heavy rains splashed the United Kingdom's Shetland
Islands Wednesday to Thursday. Within 24 hours, Lerwick was washed by
3.1 inches of rain whereas August's mean rainfall here is 2.9 inches.

A big, autumn-like storm brought a cold, soaking rain to parts of
northern Ontario, Canada, this midweek. Near the southern shores of
Hudson Bay, the town of Peawanuck (formerly known as Winisk) collected
about 3.0 inches of rain late Wednesday to midday Thursday with
temperatures largely in the 30s.
