Typhoon Megi is lashing parts of South Korea and southwestern
Japan as of late Wednesday afternoon, EDT. Megi is centered about 125
miles east-northeast of Cheju Island, South Korea. With highest
sustained winds of 75 mph, the typhoon is moving north-northeastward
at 22 mph. Megi's core is forecast to brush southeastern mainland
South Korea then cut a path across the Sea of Japan on its way to
northern Japan during the next 24-36 hours. In doing so, its stormy
weather would spread over much of South Korea and parts of Japan, but
the storm would also be weakening.

Excessive rains linked indirectly to Megi washed South Korea and
parts of southern North Korea during the first half of the week. Much
of South Korea was drenched by 2-8 inches of rain within 48-72 hours
ended Wednesday evening, local time, and there were even rainier
places. Wando and Kwangju, both southern sites, were hit by 13.1 and
12.0 inches of rain, respectively, within 24 hours. In the north,
72-hour rainfall was 9.4 inches at Wonju.

A new tropical depression has come to life over the western North
Pacific Ocean in the vicinity of the eastern Caroline Islands. Late
Wednesday afternoon, EDT, the depression holds top sustained winds of
35 mph about a center which is 45 miles northwest of Eniwetok Atoll
and 460 miles northeast of Ponape (Pohnpei); it is moving towards the
west-northwest at 9 mph. Strengthening on a general westward, mainly
open-water heading is forecast for this cyclone during the next 2-3
days. Thus, indications are that it will become a named tropical
storm.

Stiff, dust-laden winds choked Kuwait City, Kuwait, on Wednesday.
Northwesterly winds blowing 20-25 mph blew dust and sand from nearby
deserts into this capital city, thereby cutting the visibility below 1
mile for almost six hours. At its lowest, the visibility was
five-eighths of a mile. The air was dry with relative humidity as low
as 4%.

Strong winds buffeted much of New Zealand on Tuesday and into
Wednesday as wind gusts were as high as 100 mph in parts of the
country. Winds as high as 56 mph were sustained in Castle point, New
Zealand as a storm moved off to the east. Heavy snow also fell in the
higher elevations of the islands as in Castle Point, nearly 3.8 inches
of rain fell during the day Tuesday and Wednesday.

Over the past 2 days in England, heavy rainfall has brought some
flooding across much of the country. In Camborne, southeastern
England, over 2.3 inches of rain fell in less than 12 hours, bringing
the total for the past 3 days to over 3 inches of rain.
