August 16, 2004 6:00 p.m.

Tropical Storm Megi has strengthened over the western Philippine
Sea. Late Monday afternoon, EDT, Megi holds highest sustained winds of
50 mph about a center which is 320 miles south of Naha, Okinawa,
Japan. The storm is moving north-northwestward at 16 mph. Megi is
forecast to strengthen steadily on a northwestward heading during the
next 48 hours. On this course, the cyclone would pass over Japan's
southern Ryukyu Islands on its way to the East China Sea. Thereafter,
eastern China, the Korean Peninsula or southwestern Japan might be
threatened.

The week began with locally excessive rains in northern India. In
the city of Kota, rainfall was 8.4 inches within 33 hours ended Monday
evening, local time. These downpours accounted for about 80% of
August's mean rainfall here.

Fierce winds belted the Princess Astrid Coast of East Antarctica
Sunday to Monday. At Russia's Novolazarevskaya base, these winds blew
above 70 mph for about 20 hours and they peaked at nearly 85 mph. The
story was similar at nearby Maitri, an Indian outpost. Here, winds
between 45 and 75 mph were clocked for more than 36 hours.

A strong tropical wave over the western North Pacific Ocean near
the eastern Caroline Islands is being closely watched as there are
signs that a tropical depression might form here soon.

The Philippines has seen plenty of rainfall over the past few
days. In Puerto Princesa, rainfall for the the weekend was over 6
inches, with most of that falling during the day Sunday. Rainfall was
4.70 inches ending late Sunday evening, EDT, and rain continues to
fall over the entire area.

Over the past several days in southern Canada, temperatures have
climbed well above average. Lytton, British Columbia, climbed to 100
on Sunday, 107 on Saturday and 105 on Friday, well above the average
high of 80 degrees. In fact, the low temperatures have only been
getting to the average high temperature.
