Winchester (nw) VA

Hello everyone. Looks like we will miss most or all of Charley's rains
here. At 3:30pm, the westernmost edge of the rain was near Staunton VA (
I 64/ I-81 junction) and moving NNE rapidly. The NWS just cancelled the
flood watch for our region.

Charley, with it's accelerated northeast trek, should spare most of VA &
MD flooding & wind damage. The Norfolk VA & Ocean City MD regions may
get moderate damage, though.

-----

Further south, I had two cousins who rode the storm out in Cape Coral
FL, near Friday's landfall.

I sent e-mail to them Thur evening relaying NWS & local information. At
the time they were expecting sustained tropical storm winds w/ hurricane
gusts. Charley's path was expected to bring in just south of Tampa as a
120mph Cat 3 storm. As well all know, landfall was at 3:45pm near Ponta
Gorda at 3:45mph.

Cape Coral is east of Captiva Island & the sounds & southwest of Fort
Myers. Charley had not made landfall yet when it passed by, a mere 15
miles west.

One cousin at noon Fri had a standby plan to evacuate, but had not done
so yet, She did so before the brunt hit. She has returned home, w/ a
borrowed generator, and is safe.

Another cousin is also safe. He sent his 10 year old son inland away
from the path. They are both at home again.

I have no idea how much property damage either suffered.

I won't be doing an album on this storm. There will likely no newsworthy
weather here, & only minimum damage toward the Baltimore Washington
area. There is ample cable tv news coverage of this storm available,
along with the above local links.
