Typhoon Rananim is now decaying over east-central China. As the
storm neared the coast of China Thursday, a small island,
Ta-chen-tao, just off the coast had sustained winds of 80 mph and
rainfall over a 24 hour period was 7.09 inches. Rananim brought very
heavy rainfall across the province of Zhejiang as it moved inland.
Lishui had 6.28 inches of rain, while the nearby city of Linhai had
a total of 14.41 inches in a little over 36 hours time.
Central and southern Algeria have been baking under unrelenting
heat this week. From Monday through Thursday, many spots soared past
110 and some areas were above 115 degrees. The hot spots the past
couple of days have been 119 or 120 degrees.
Hurricane Charley continues to intensify as it moved from the
Caribbean Sea into southeast Gulf of Mexico. On Thursday Charley came
within 30 miles of Grand Cayman, though the worst of the wind and
rain with the storm remained just to the north. Winds at Georgetown
stayed under 30 mph, and rainfall was less than one half inch.
Charley then moved north across the western part of Cuba Thursday
night passing just west of Havana. Winds were sustained at 53 mph and
gusted to 76 mph briefly at Havana as Charley blew through. Charley
is now taking aim on the west coast of Florida.
A strong storm moved into northern Europe Thursday. On the
storm's southern flank, strong to locally severe thunderstorms rolled
across northeast France, Germany and into Poland. Munich, Germany had
wind gusts over 60 mph from a thunderstorm and temperatures dropped
20 degrees in a short time. Heavy rain fell on the storm's northern
flank across Belgium and the Netherlands. Leeuwarden, Netherlands
measured 2.37 inches of rain.
