July 28, 2004 5:09 p.m.

Typhoon Namtheun is looming at sea south of Japan. Late Wednesday
afternoon, EDT, the core of Namtheun is 290 miles south of Tokyo. The
storm holds highest sustained winds of 90-95 mph; it is drifting to
the west at about 7 mph. Namtheun is forecast to follow a mostly
westward track for the next two to three days. Ultimately, such a
path could lead to a landfall in southwestern Japan.

Hurricane Darby has strengthened over the eastern North Pacific
Ocean. Darby is, as of late Wednesday afternoon, EDT, over open waters
about 1060 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Highest
sustained winds are up to 105 mph; Darby is making its way towards the
west-northwest at 13 mph. Only open seas are in the hurricane's
future.

Two-day rainfall in eastern Hungary as of Wednesday was 4.1
inches at Szeged, 3.5 inches at Debrecen and 3.3 inches at Miskolc.

Southern China Wednesday had rainfall of 6.6 inches at Lianping
and 5.5 inches at Shantou.

Nagoya, Japan, topped out a sweltering 100 degrees Wednesday. The
mean high for July is 86 degrees.

Wednesday, the temperature at Agadir, Morocco, flirted with 100
degrees at mid day. This was far shy of the last five mid-day
readings, all of which were in the 110s. Even though the
average daily high for July is 81 degrees, the string of high
temperatures was: 117, 118, 117, 116 and 116 degrees, respectively,
Friday through Tuesday.

Eastern South Africa was pelted by soaking rains Tuesday to
Wednesday. In Durban, for example, rainfall was 2.4 inches within 36
hours as of Wednesday evening, local time. The average rainfall here
for all of July is 1.4 inches, so these downpours were unusually
heavy. Cape Saint Lucia was splashed by 2.0 inches of rain within 24
hours.

This week has been unusually hot within Spain's Canary Islands. On
the island of Tenerife, for example, 106 degrees was registered
Tuesday at the Reina Sofia international airport. This high heat came
with strong winds gusting to 55 mph. Wednesday was nearly as hot with
a high temperature of 102 degrees. Set in the Atlantic Ocean off the
coast of Morocco, these islands are usually moderated by ocean
breezes. July's mean daily high is in the lower 80s.
