July 27, 2004 5:15 p.m.

Typhoon Namtheun continues to ply the western North Pacific Ocean
south of Japan. Late Tuesday afternoon, EDT, the core of Namtheun is
420 miles north-northeast of Iwo Jima, and 405 miles southeast of
Tokyo. The typhoon holds highest sustained winds of about 105 mph,
which are lower than they had been earlier; it is moving to the
northwest at 12 mph. Namtheun is forecast to follow a path over water
towards the northwest and the west for another two to three days; it
does pose a threat of landfall to southwestern Japan.

Over the eastern North Pacific Ocean, Darby is a strengthening
tropical storm. As of late Tuesday afternoon, EDT, Darby is over open
waters about 900 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Highest
sustained winds are now 70 mph as the storm makes its way towards the
west-northwest at 12 mph. Potential for further strengthening and
acquisition of hurricane intensity is good; the likely track is seen to
be somewhat north of due west for the next 2-3 days.

Tuesday, Agadir, Morocco, had a high temperature of 116
degrees. This was the fifth-straight day of 110s compared with the
average daily high for July of 81 degrees. Friday through Monday,
respective highs were: 117, 118, 117 and 116.

Southeastern Europe has seen some unusually heavy summertime rains
this week. On the Greek island of Kerkira, for example, thunderstorms
Monday night unloaded 1.5 inches of rain within only six hours. July's
mean rainfall here is just 0.3 of an inch, so these downpours were
five times the monthly average. Wind gusts to 40 mph were also
clocked.

In eastern Thailand, soaking showers and thunderstorms left a
rainfall of 7.1 inches within 24 hours ended Tuesday afternoon, local
time, at Roi Et.
