July 26, 2004 5:05 p.m.

Namtheun is now a powerful typhoon over the western North Pacific
Ocean. Late Monday afternoon, EDT, the eye of Typhoon Namtheun is 350
miles northeast of Iwo Jima. Wielding highest sustained winds of 130
mph, Namtheun is moving to the northwest at 12 mph. Namtheun is
forecast to take a track towards the northwest and the west over the
next two to three days.

A tropical wave over the northern South China Sea is considered a
candidate to become the region's next tropical depression. Monday
morning, EDT, this wave was about 275 miles southeast of Hong Kong,
China; it was moving north-northwestward at 17 mph.

A new tropical depression is spinning over the eastern North
Pacific Ocean. As of late Monday afternoon, EDT, the depression is
centered about 785 miles south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
With highest sustained winds near 35 mph, the depression is moving
towards the west-northwest at 13 mph. This cyclone is forecast to soon
acquire tropical storm strength, but also to maintain an open-water
heading towards the west-northwest over the next 2-3 days.

Last week ended with a withering heat wave over most of the
Iberian Peninsula. Hardest hit in Spain was Andalusia, which takes in
much of the southwest. Friday through Sunday saw widespread
100-degree heat daily with hot spots to at least 110. At Cordoba,
respective highs were 106, 111 and 111 degrees. Jerez de la Frontera
was nearly 110 degrees each afternoon, as was Sevilla. In Portugal,
Evora suffered wilting afternoons to 108 degrees; Sunday's hot spot,
Faro, registered 112. Monday, southern Iberia was off to another
blistering start with mid-day temperatures above 100 degrees in both
Spain and Portugal.

The latest heat wave in Iberia was contiguous with an even hotter
blast roasting Morocco. Agagir, normally within the reach of moderate
Atlantic winds from the southwestern coast, set highs of respective
highs of 117, 118 and 117 degrees through Sunday; Monday's high
temperature was 116. The average monthly high for July in Agadir is 81
degrees.

Speaking of heat, there was a withering blast of it Monday over
southwestern Asia. Mid-afternoon temperatures were 121 degrees at
Kuwait, Kuwait, and at Abadan and Agha Jari, Iran. Ahwaz, Iran, read
120 degrees.

To offset the searing weather news from north of the Equator, a
look at Antarctica might be fitting. Monday's lows included 101.2
degrees below zero at the Amundsen-Scott, South Pole station, and
112.5 degrees below zero at the Vostok station. The Dome "C" station
dipped at least 108 degrees below zero.

Some unusually heavy summertime rains splashed parts of southern
Italy Monday. In Marina di Ginosa, thunderstorms and showers unloaded
1.9 inches of rain within 12 hours. During the same time, rainfall was
1.5 inches at Bari. Average rainfall during July is 0.3-0.8 of an inch
across this part of Italy, so these rains were about 2-5 times the
monthly mean in just one-half of a day.

Monday was abnormally warm well north of the Arctic Circle in
northern Scandinavia. The Kevo Nature Park in northern Finland and the
town of Alta in northern Norway both registered a high of 80 degrees
whereas average daily highs in July here are in the lower 60s.
Moreover, the temperature dipped no lower than 65 degrees Sunday night
to Monday morning in Alta.
