Friday saw the lowest temperature of the year thus far at the
Vostok station of East Antarctica. The low was 115.8 degrees below
zero. Dome "C", another lofty, inland station, registered 112 degrees
below zero Friday. Saturday, Vostok "warmed" such that the low was
109 degrees below zero.
Celia is now a weakening tropical depression over the eastern
North Pacific Ocean. Late Friday night, EDT, Celia holds highest
sustained winds of 35 mph; its center is 1250 miles west-southwest
of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. West-bound Celia is forecast to dissipate
over the open Pacific Ocean.
Saturday, much of East Asia is sweltering. In South Korea, Pohong
reached 100 degrees, well above the mean monthly high of 83 degrees.
More outstanding was the high of 96 degrees set in Abashiri, Japan.
Lying along the chill Sea of Okhotsk, Abashiri has an average monthly
high of 69 degrees. But the hottest weather overall was in eastern
China, where 100-degree heat was fairly wide spread. Shanghai, for
one, reached 102 degrees at mid afternoon.
Friday, far-western Canada had record-setting heat. Specifically,
Vancouver's official high of 86 degrees set a new record for the date.
Nearby, though, things were much hotter, with the more inland
Abbotsford reaching 97 degrees. On Vancouver Island, Port Alberni
high 98 degrees, and the BC capital, Victoria, topped out 94 degrees.
East of the Coast Ranges, Hope saw 100, and Lytton, a searing 102.
Friday dawned chilly, even cold, for mid-summer in parts of
central Canada. In Ontario, Timmins and Nagagami dipped to 33 degrees,
readings that were almost 20 degrees too cold for an average July day.
Northern Saskatchewan had 32 degrees at Key Lake versus an average low
of 48.
Lisbon, Portugal, sweltered Friday afternoon as the temperature
rose to 96 degrees. This capital city, which is normally moderated by
breezes from the Atlantic Ocean, has an average daily high in the
upper 70s at this part of the year. Elsewhere in Iberia, Evora,
Portugal, had 104 degrees. In Spain, Jerez de la Frontera soared to
108 degrees, and Cordoba, 106. Saturday was set to be even hotter:
Jerez was already 108 degrees at mid day.
It's been a hot summer in Tokyo, Japan, and Friday was no
different. The 93-degree high was about 10 degrees above average.
Moreover, Friday was the 44th consecutive day to be warmer than
average. The average temperature here during this lengthy stretch was
almost 8 degrees above the mean. Tuesday and Wednesday of this week
saw high temperatures of 103 and 101 degrees, respectively.
